Uns (اُنس) is an Urdu word for the love that grows from closeness — the bond you form with what you live beside, earned slowly, through presence. No object in a home earns that the way a rug does. This is why we exist.
Ahsan Amin spent 15 years inside the manufacturing world — private label production, building beautiful things for other people's brands. Over 250 projects, work that's ended up in more than 10,000 homes, hundreds of designers along the way. And every time, the last step of production was the same: strip the origin, ship the object as if it came from nowhere.
UNS began as a refusal of that last step. Named regions. Real techniques. A community you can actually stand inside, not a supply chain hiding behind it.
A craft doesn't die in a factory fire. It dies quietly — when the region that makes a material stops seeing any value from it, when the next generation looks at the loom and sees no real opportunity, and walks away. That's not a materials problem. It's an incentive problem.
UNS sources region-specific materials and puts the value back into the region itself, not just into a name on a certificate. When a region prospers from what it makes, the next generation has a reason to stay at the loom. We're not preserving a craft by pointing a camera at it — we're changing whether it's worth learning in the first place.
The traditional rug trade involves a maker, a regional exporter, a national importer, a distributor, and a showroom — each adding margin, each obscuring provenance. The customer pays for all of it and knows none of it. Middlemen are distance, priced in.
UNS sources directly from the regions where each technique lives at its best, so expertise is bought at its source and paid at its worth. Fair pricing is not a discount story; it is the closeness story, applied to money. When the chain is short, everyone in it can be seen.
Uns is the love that grows from closeness. It cannot happen at first sight — it has to be earned, slowly, through presence. The name is the product promise.
Open to anyone who can use a rug as a medium — visual artists, sculptors, interior and graphic designers, home stagers. Furniture stores and hotels too. We develop the piece around your identity, not ours.
Made for one floor, one room, one family. Closeness designed in before the first knot is tied — uns, made to order.
The modern rug industry runs on distance. UNS runs on closeness. Five pillars, one act of closing, told five ways.
I spent 15 years in manufacturing, on the private-label side — 250+ projects, work that's now sitting in over 10,000 homes, built alongside hundreds of designers. Which means I spent 15 years making beautiful things and then, as the final step, removing every trace of where they came from. That was the job: strip the origin, ship the object. I was good at it. And it slowly became unbearable.
UNS is my intervention in an industry that treats distance as efficiency. We source each technique from the region that has mastered it, and we put the value back into that region, not just into a story about it. We open our production to any artist or designer the large rug companies shut out — sculptors, stagers, furniture stores, hotels — and build every piece around their identity, not ours. And we make rugs the way rugs deserve to be made: for one home at a time, to be walked on for decades and handed down.
We named the company UNS after the Urdu word for the love that grows from closeness — because that is the only thing we actually sell. The wool, the silk, the knots, the gold work: those are just how we make room for it.
